Powering the heater circuit in an MK-V Hummingbird monitor when using the PRO connector for video
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The MK-V Hummingbird monitor includes a heater that is wired to pins 14 and 15 of the internal 15-way D connector.
- The heater can be powered independently from the PRO connector by connecting a separate power source to the 4-pin Lemo connector on the rear breakout box, routing it to pins 14 and 15 of the D connector.
- Powering both the PRO connector and the 4-pin connector simultaneously does not cause damage, allowing video and power to come through the PRO connector while the heater receives power from a separate source.
- A simple modification involves adding a switch to control heater power and connecting it to the D connector pins, which can be powered from sources such as a P-tap battery or spare DC outputs.
- Extreme cold conditions, such as 8 degrees Fahrenheit, can cause LCD image degradation even when the monitor is on, and heater functionality becomes critical in such environments.
Depends on
- The original MK-V documentation and schematics were unavailable to the user, making diagnosis difficult without manufacturer support.
- The heater wiring implementation by MK-V may vary between units, as the panel manufacturer stated they supply heaters to MK-V but do not know how the integrator connects them.
- The thread does not detail whether the heater mod was successfully completed or tested after modification.
- The experience is specific to cold exterior filming conditions and may not apply to normal operating environments.
