Upgrading an Archer rig from 12V to 24V power system
20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Running 24V power through the existing cable sleeve in the Archer post and sled requires careful work due to tight packing of existing cables and a particularly constrictive hole at the post mount on the sled base.
- A technique for threading new 24V cabling involves pushing a wire down the sleeve first, creating a small hole to pull out enough wire, then continuing to push further.
- At the stage end, connecting 24V is straightforward and only requires screwing in the cable to a terminal on the board.
- At the base end, significantly more work is needed to accommodate a second battery for 24V.
- An alternative approach to full internal rewiring is to draw 12V from a D-tap on the main battery, pass it through a second battery via its D-tap to achieve 24V output, then cable this externally or repurpose one or more component cables for transmission to the stage.
- When shooting at 24V, component cables may become available since they would not be needed for video output.
Depends on
- The external cabling approach using D-tap batteries is described as a workaround rather than a permanent solution.
- No information is provided about whether professional upgrade services offer standard procedures for this conversion.
- The specific models and years of batteries suitable for this upgrade are not discussed.
