Battery and power supply selection for Flyer24LE Steadicam rig

18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Flyer24LE sled battery powers the monitor and all 12V outputs on the sled, including camera power on the top stage if the correct cable is used.
  • Most small prosumer cameras should be powered by their own batteries rather than from the sled, as these batteries are lightweight and reduce complexity.
  • V-mount batteries are more prevalent and easier to find than Anton Bauer mount batteries in many regions.
  • V-mount batteries can be double-stacked with certain types for extended runtime, whereas this is not possible with Anton Bauer mounts.
  • The Flyer24LE LCD monitor will operate with any voltage supplied by batteries mounted on either AB or V-lock connectors.
  • Operators typically carry at least four fully charged batteries and a charger to avoid running out of power during shoots.
  • Small camera batteries weigh very little and using them instead of running cameras from the sled battery simplifies the power distribution setup.
  • Dionic 90 and Trimpac batteries are appropriate choices for powering the sled, while Elipz batteries are not suitable for this application.

Depends on

  • The discussion is from 2008 and specific battery models mentioned may no longer be current market options.
  • No direct comparison data was provided between different hard case manufacturers for the Flyer24LE.
  • The specific cameras mentioned in the discussion have varying battery compatibility, limiting the generalizability of power recommendations.
  • Participant recommendations about which mount type to use were based on regional availability at the time of discussion.
