Upgrading Ultra1 camera sled video output from 7-pin Lemo component connector to HD-SDI BNC connector
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The original 7-pin Lemo component connector on the Ultra1 can deliver HD signal to monitors but the signal strength is insufficient for recording devices like the Nanoflash, which loses source after approximately 40 seconds.
- Adding an HD-SDI BNC connector requires nearly complete disassembly of the topstage and post sections.
- Belden 9221 cable can be used for the HD-SDI installation.
- The new cable can be routed by coiling it around the existing harness using zip ties rather than completely removing the original harness.
- Space constraints inside the post make fitting thicker cable difficult and the connector mounting point is structurally weak.
- On similar rigs like the Archer1, the 7-pin Lemo connector can be physically replaced with an HD-grade BNC connector at the topstage/junction box while reusing the existing internal cabling.
- Coiling the new cable presents the greatest installation challenge due to risk of crimping between post sections when reassembling.
Depends on
- This modification was performed on specific rig models (Ultra1, Archer1) and may not be applicable to all variants.
- The internal cable routing and connector compatibility may differ between prototype and production versions.
- One participant's experience involved gutting electronics and replacing the entire internal box, making that modification more extensive than the basic HD-SDI upgrade.
- The structural integrity of the connector mounting point was noted as weak by manufacturer consultation.
