Mounting teleprompters on Steadicam rigs while maintaining balance and weight distribution

15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Standard 22-inch autocue monitors are too heavy and create excessive top-heaviness that prevents proper Steadicam balance and smooth operation.
  • Smaller monitors in the 6 to 10 inch range mounted on top of the lens offer significantly reduced weight compared to traditional large autocue setups.
  • iPad-based teleprompter systems can position talent's eye line through the lens rather than above the camera, improving the visual appearance on screen.
  • iPad prompter systems require the operator to remain within Bluetooth range (typically less than 30 feet) to control the software.
  • iPad screens may not provide sufficient brightness for outdoor daytime shooting applications.
  • Dedicated through-the-lens prompter rigs designed for Steadicam use offer rigid construction and modular mounting solutions compatible with various camera models.
  • Laptop computers paired with teleprompter software provide easier on-the-fly editing capabilities compared to iPad or iPhone control.

Depends on

  • Distance limitations between talent and camera when using small on-lens monitors
  • Bluetooth range constraints for iPad-based prompter control systems
  • Brightness and visibility issues with iPad screens in daylight conditions
  • The SteadiPrompt prototype was demonstrated at NAB 2011 but shipping status was pending at the time of discussion
  • Budget constraints may limit implementation of specialized Steadicam-compatible prompter systems
