Converting 8mm home movie film to digital formats for preservation
21 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found
- Transfer services exist that offer multiple output formats beyond DVD, including MiniDV, Digital 8, and HDV for better future-proofing and less compression
- Different HDV camera manufacturers record incompatible variations of the HDV format, creating compatibility and longevity concerns
- DV format on MiniDV tape with additional copies on computer hard drive is considered more future-proof than HDV at present
- 8mm film quality is roughly comparable to standard DV resolution, so upgrading to HDV may not yield significant quality gains
- HDV compression artifacts can occur during transfer, though some transfer services offer grain reduction processing
- Creating multiple copies of transferred tapes and backing up to hard drives soon after receiving them reduces risk of data loss
Depends on
- Discussion occurred in 2005 so format recommendations may be outdated
- No specific transfer service was definitively endorsed or rejected by participants
- HDV compatibility issues were acknowledged but participants had mixed personal experience with the format
- The long-term viability of any digital format discussed remains uncertain and speculative
