Differences between Steadicam Flyer and Flyer LE models and weight capacity considerations
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Flyer LE features a carbon fiber telescoping center post while the standard Flyer uses an aluminum fixed-length post, allowing the LE to support greater payload weight.
- The Flyer LE includes a larger diameter post and grip, a heavier-duty gimbal, and a 19 lb arm compared to the standard Flyer's 15 lb arm.
- The Flyer LE vest includes metal shoulder buckle attachments as an improvement over earlier versions.
- The Flyer LE arm features hitch pins for easier switching to goofy configuration, though earlier arms can be retrofitted with this upgrade.
- The Flyer cannot be upgraded to Flyer LE specifications; the gimbal may fail if the device is overloaded beyond specifications.
- When weighing camera payload capacity, measure everything that will be mounted above the gimbal, but exclude batteries from the calculation.
- The Flyer LE and standard Flyer share unchanged top and bottom stages and basic vest construction aside from specific noted improvements.
Depends on
- Information reflects equipment variations produced up to 2010, including 24-volt, HD, and SE special edition models with different configurations.
- Used market examples may show variations between different production runs of both standard Flyer and LE models.
- The claim about gimbal failure from overloading is based on general caution rather than specific documented failure data.
