Adjusting ride and lift controls on Steadicam arms for proper balance and smooth operation

18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Lift adjustment controls how much weight the arm carries and should be set so the arm sections hang slightly above horizontal, typically at 5 to 10 degrees.
  • Ride adjustment determines the iso-elastic response of the arm and controls how strongly the arm seeks its center position when booming up and down.
  • To set ride control, gradually unscrew the ride knob while booming the arm up and down until it begins to lock, then screw it back in a couple of turns to find the optimal point.
  • Heavier camera rigs require more iso-elastic response, shown by more threads visible on the ride control screw, while lighter rigs need less.
  • The two controls interact somewhat, meaning changes to ride adjustment can slightly affect the lift setting.
  • Proper arm setup requires both sections to track together and work in synchronization when booming, with minimal operating effort and without locking up or going over center.
  • Some operators prefer to leave ride adjustment at an extreme setting and rely solely on lift adjustment when changing rig weight between jobs.
  • The arm should be adjusted so both sections pass through horizontal alignment together rather than at an angle when in balanced position.

Depends on

  • Different arm models may have different adjustment procedures and characteristics.
  • The optimal adjustment depends on operator technique and personal preference for arm responsiveness.
  • One experienced operator reported that maximum iso-elasticity settings can negatively affect arm performance with very light rigs and recommended backing off slightly in those cases.
  • Instructions for achieving perfect adjustment may require trial and error and hands-on testing.
