Mounting a Firestore FS-100 external recorder on a Steadicam rig with an HVX200 camera
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Mounting the external recorder on top or bottom of the camera raises its height and center of gravity, which can destabilize a Steadicam rig.
- Mounting the recorder to the rear of the camera using a flat plate arrangement keeps the center of gravity more aligned with the camera itself and provides better stability.
- A rigid mounting solution is critical because any movement or flex in the recorder mount will continuously throw off the balance of the Steadicam rig.
- Rear-mounted configurations using shorter rods and risers result in a more stable setup than top-mounted solutions.
Depends on
- No one in the thread reported actual flight experience with this specific combination.
- The stability of certain mounting solutions like the Jimmy Box cage or Focus Enhancements mount was not tested in practice.
- The tightness and reliability of homemade screw-mount solutions were described as uncertain.
