Fixing a skewed image on a CRT monitor caused by a loose deflection yoke

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A tilted or skewed image on a CRT monitor is often caused by a loose deflection yoke that needs to be repositioned and retightened
  • The deflection yoke is a plastic assembly with copper wire coils located where the CRT tube flares out, held in place by a clamp with a locking screw
  • Realignment involves loosening the yoke clamp screw, rotating the yoke assembly while the monitor is powered on and displaying video until the image is horizontal, then retightening the screw
  • CRT monitors contain very high voltages in capacitors and EHT areas that can cause serious injury or death, requiring complete power disconnection and safe handling procedures
  • Small trim magnets glued to the yoke or CRT can fall off and cause image distortion, and should be checked and reglued if loose
  • Adding magnets to specific spots on the yoke using silicone adhesive can help correct linearity and skew issues

Depends on

  • This repair involves dangerous high voltages and should only be attempted by qualified technicians or with expert supervision
  • The procedure requires powering on the monitor during adjustment, which increases electrical hazard
  • Some monitors have electronic standby switches rather than hardware power switches, meaning pressing the power button does not fully cut power
  • Protective gloves may not provide reliable insulation against very high voltages and can develop small holes that allow electricity through
  • The adjustment method works best when test patterns with vertical lines are available to verify alignment
  • Complete success depends on monitor design and the specific cause of the skew
