Reducing build weight for an ARRI ALEXA Mini LF on Steadicam®: SAM plate, wireless focus control, eliminator plate, and motor placement.
What the thread found
- Using a SAM plate instead of a shoulder bridge plate saves significant weight and brings the camera closer to the top stage.
- The EVF (electronic viewfinder) can be omitted when the focus puller operates via WCU-4, Hi-5, or ARRI Companion App for camera control; some operators retain the EVF for quick adjustments and despite the weight penalty.
- Focus motors can be mounted inverted from above, eliminating the need for lower rods; Teradek can be positioned on the 'silent' side of the rig.
- The onboard battery can be replaced with an eliminator plate (4-pin XLR to V-lock/AB connector) or omitted entirely by using ARRI-specific power cable directly from the sled.
- Assistants often build with sliding plates, rods, handles, and onboard batteries; this assembly area offers easy weight savings.
Depends on
- Approach depends on workflow (wireless vs. hardwired focus control and monitoring).
- Elimination of onboard battery requires power distribution from the sled.
- Motor mounting and cable routing depend on rig configuration and camera position.
