Maximum camera payload on Steadicam® Axis: ALEXA Mini LF with Signature Primes and power limitations.

What the thread found
- Steadicam® Axis rated payload capacity is approximately 9 kg / 20 lb; multiple operators advise staying below this limit to prevent bending of the stage and other structural components.
- One operator successfully ran an ALEXA Mini with Angenieux zoom, focus motor, and Teradek transmitter (approximately 9–9.5 kg total) on the A30 arm by extending the center post to balance weight distribution; a lighter lens would have been preferable.
- A significantly overweight configuration on the A30 arm caused operational failure; the camera package was progressively reduced during shooting, and power issues forced relocation to a belt battery for the camera—early payload planning is essential.
- Steadicam® Axis supplies approximately 14 V power, not 24 V as the Zephyr does; this is a disadvantage for 24 V cameras, though 12 V loads are acceptable.
- ALEXA Mini is regarded as unproblematic on the A30 arm, whereas operators reported poor experience when loading a Zephyr near its weight limit.
- Ambiguity remains whether the 9 kg specification includes only the camera package above the gimbal or also batteries and accessories mounted below.
Depends on
- ALEXA Mini LF with Signature Prime lenses remains in dispute regarding acceptability at the stated payload limit.
- Payload capacity interpretation unclear: whether specification covers camera body and lenses only, or includes lower-mounted batteries and accessories.
- Power delivery at 14 V limits compatibility with 24 V camera systems.
- Center post extension required for weight balance may alter gimbal performance characteristics.
