Aspect ratio mismatch when downconverting RED One 2.40 format video to a 4:3 monitor
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- When downconverting 2.40 aspect ratio video from RED One to standard definition via a converter, ensure the output format matches the display device's native aspect ratio to avoid image cropping on the sides and top/bottom edges
- The AJA HD10MD3 downconverter has a DIP switch setting (DIP #5) that allows selection between 16:9 and 4:3 output formats
- A 4:3 aspect ratio CRT monitor will crop 16:9 video on the sides if the downconverter is set to output 16:9 instead of 4:3
Depends on
- The issue was specific to one particular CRT monitor model and one downconverter model in a 2.40 format shooting scenario
- The solution relies on correctly identifying and adjusting the specific DIP switch on the downconverter hardware
