Using a tilt head with an extended post for commercial camera work

15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A tilt head allows an operator to use a much longer central post while maintaining dynamic balance and keeping the post more vertical during operation
  • With a tilt head supporting up to 20 degrees of tilt, panning speeds and shot complexity are not significantly more difficult compared to standard shorter posts
  • Extended posts become much harder to operate smoothly without a tilt head, especially during fast pans or when the post needs to tilt, requiring additional skill and weight balancing effort
  • Using a longer post without adding weight to the sled base is practical when a tilt head is available, eliminating the need for battery relocation or monitor repositioning

Depends on

  • Tilt head capability was limited to plus or minus 20 degrees on this specific sled model
  • The approach was used for a single commercial shoot with particular circumstances that favored an extended post
  • No quantitative data provided on actual difficulty differences between tilt and non-tilt head operation
