SSR-1 NTSC output signal quality issues when used with Genesis in Panalog mode
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Panalog transfer curve on Genesis outputs a log signal that displays with compressed highlights and low contrast on video monitors, which is normal behavior and not a malfunction
- SSR-1 SD output configuration options are limited to aspect ratio, format, and black level setup, with no onboard gamma correction available
- The Genesis Advanced Down Converter (GADC) mounted on the top mag port provides improved SD output quality compared to direct camera output
- Weak video signal from SSR-1 becomes further degraded when distributed to multiple consumers such as monitors and transmitters without a video distribution amplifier
Depends on
- Pulsating black level issues mentioned were not confirmed as a known problem and may require investigation with manufacturer support
- GADC solution is specific to configurations using SRW, SSR, or Fiber systems
- Gamma Display Processor (GDP) for proper color correction requires external hardware, is AC-powered only, and does not provide SD downconversion
