Eliminating vertical jitter when running with a Steadicam Pilot rig

12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Excessive grip tension on the gimbal handle during running can transfer vibrations into the video, and this tension often results from an improperly balanced rig that tries to float away rather than maintain position
  • Shortening the post and adding weight to the rig increases inertia and can improve stability during high-speed movement, even with a lightweight camera like the GH4
  • Monitor flex caused by velcro alternatives to a missing anti-rotation bracket can introduce additional vibrations into footage and should be addressed with a rigid mounting solution
  • Running with smaller, controlled steps instead of normal stride length makes it harder to achieve desired speed and causes fatigue without necessarily improving stability

Depends on

  • The advice applies specifically to the Pilot gimbal system with lightweight cameras
  • Monitor vibration issue was specific to one operator's setup after losing the factory bracket
  • The connection between running posture and rig stability was not fully explored or resolved in the thread
