XCS-Ultimate gimbal losing center after purchase; role of the ergo handle and factory precision limits.
What the thread found
- One operator found that an XCS-Ultimate gimbal bought new had lost center; swapping the ergo grip (which was purchased used) for an original grip restored centering.
- XCS gimbals are manufactured to such precision that they require no factory adjustment and have no field-adjustable components; repair or rebuild is handled only by the maker, who also offers rental equipment.
- Attempting repairs on a gimbal can worsen the problem, as it is considered the most sensitive component of the rig.
- Before attempting service, check that the thin metal spacer under the gimbal screw is present and does not exceed 0.5 mm; clean the post and gimbal interior with isopropanol.
- Several operators reported similar centering issues with new Tiffen M2 gimbals, which the manufacturer confirmed as normal behavior.
Depends on
- Compatibility between third-party grips and gimbal precision.
- Gimbal behavior may vary depending on handle condition and assembly sequence.
