Storage and maintenance of nickel-cadmium camera batteries

19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Nickel-cadmium batteries self-discharge over time during storage and should be recharged before use
  • For storage periods exceeding six months, fully charged nickel-cadmium batteries should be placed in a sealed plastic bag and kept at approximately 8 degrees Celsius to minimize discharge
  • Batteries that have discharged beyond recovery point may sometimes be recovered by repeatedly placing them on and removing them from a charger until the charger begins charging again
  • Some charger models are more effective at recovering deeply discharged batteries than others, particularly simpler designs without intelligent circuitry

Depends on

  • Storage recommendation applies specifically to nickel-cadmium types, not other battery chemistries
  • The recovery procedure for deeply discharged batteries is time-consuming and success is not guaranteed
  • Recelling costs approximately 120 currency units per battery unit
  • One user experienced failure of previous generation batteries regardless of storage method
