Frequency of switching between regular and goofy arm sides during operation.

What the thread found

  • The vast majority of operators never switch the arm mounting side, or do so only in exceptional circumstances such as following an actor down a staircase; some who attempted it reported noticeably degraded handling.
  • Rather than reconfiguring the rig, some operators swing the stabilizer to the goofy side to get closer to walls, but express uncertainty whether the arm is designed for that angle of operation.
  • Operators using specialty rigs with body-mounted or flyaway systems such as the AR Omega, Cyclo, and Rockabye report that goofy-side operation can be practical for those applications.
  • The recommended approach is to develop fluid camera operation from the operator's preferred side across all angles—including the Don-Juan position and walking backward—rather than switching arm sides; some operators remain reluctant to practice on the non-preferred side on set.
