HD SDI signal dropout issues on UltraBrite 2 monitors during initial connection

17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • When an UltraBrite 2 monitor first receives an HD SDI signal, it may cycle through intermittent signal loss and recovery for several attempts before stabilizing, though the monitor eventually locks onto the image and operates normally.
  • An internal ribbon cable between circuit boards in early UltraBrite 2 units was excessively long and caused intermittent dropouts that would disappear as the monitor warmed up.
  • Shortening the internal ribbon cable to standard length resolves the dropout problem in affected early production UltraBrite 2 monitors.
  • The issue occurs regardless of cable type used for signal input, camera model, or frame rate selected.
  • Disabling the auto-source function does not resolve the dropout behavior.

Depends on

  • This problem was identified in early production versions of the UltraBrite 2 and is not confirmed to affect current production units.
  • The specific internal ribbon cable referenced in the solution has not been definitively identified by all users experiencing the issue.
  • One user reported additional problems with FLG, on-screen horizon level, and composite signal when using an 8-pin LEMO cable, but it remains unclear if this is related to the main dropout issue.
  • Multiple attempts to resolve through software updates did not help in at least one case.
