Bright 5- to 6-inch low-mode monitors with integrated level display: comparison of options and level accuracy concerns.
DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.
What the thread found
- SmallHD Ultra 5 includes level function but has an awkwardly positioned power connector that requires inverting the monitor when mounted on tilt/pan heads; it is considered a solid successor to the discontinued SmallHD 503.
- The internal level in SmallHD monitors is regarded as insufficiently accurate for Steadicam® work; it has been rarely installed since the DP7 model, though the new PageOS may restore it, though skepticism remains whether it is gyro-compensated and better than a basic bubble level.
- Portkeys BM5 III/IV is affordable, very bright, and solid; several operators use it as a low-mode monitor.
- Blackmagic 12G HDR 5-inch (2500 nits) is bright and capable of recording, but exhibits approximately 5 frames of constant input delay in practice: unsuitable at 24p, acceptable at 60p.
- Transvideo StarliteHD does not achieve sufficient brightness in direct sunlight.
- Separate levels such as CyberLevel (Lazaro Creations) perform very well according to users; a SmartSystem SM5 (5-inch, XTBus-compatible, shares settings with SM7 Pro 3G, includes anti-glare glass in bundle) was announced.
- 5.5-inch monitors are more legible than 5-inch; at 5-inch diagonal, anamorphic lenses and very low rig positions become difficult.
Depends on
- Integrated monitor levels versus separate level sensors remain disputed
- SmallHD level accuracy after PageOS update is unconfirmed
- Input delay acceptability depends on frame rate
