Executing whip-tilts with the ARRI Trinity in a commercial spot.
What the thread found
- A proven solution is to switch directly before the tilt via button into normal Steadicam® mode, locking the head so the tilt can be executed as fast as the operator can push or pull the rig; the joystick is often too slow for this.
- An alternative is to increase joystick speed significantly, though hitting the target end position then becomes uncertain, requiring in one case approximately eight takes.
- If available, the tilt can be handed to the director of photography using a remote joystick or hand wheel.
- The foundation for fast tilts is a perfectly balanced, neutral camera build with permanently mounted elements; the better the weight distribution, the faster the tilt can be executed.
Depends on
- Joystick-based speed requires precise tuning and may need multiple takes to achieve the desired framing.
- Handoff to the DP depends on having remote control hardware available on set.
- The speed of manual tilts depends entirely on the operator's physical capability and the rig's balance.
