Center post binding during extension on telescoping Steadicam rig

22 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Binding in a telescoping center post can result from the inner sleeve friction mechanism becoming sticky and may be resolved with silicone-based lubricant applied to both ends of the tube
  • Out-of-round tubing, even by minimal tolerances, causes binding during extension and contraction of telescoping posts
  • Over-tightening external clamps such as docking rings, monitor brackets, and gimbals can deform aluminum posts and create binding
  • Dents in the post material will cause binding during telescoping motion
  • Debris and lack of maintenance contribute to binding in moving parts of Steadicam rigs
  • Aluminum posts are more prone to out-of-roundness than carbon fiber posts unless centerless ground during manufacturing
  • Loosening the monitor bracket and docking ring tension can sometimes improve but not fully resolve binding caused by post geometry issues

Depends on

  • The solution involving silicone spray application was specific to one user's experience with an internal sleeve tension mechanism
  • Post age and manufacturing history affect the likelihood and type of binding issues
  • The distinction between outer and inner post deformation requires partial disassembly to diagnose
  • Rental equipment may have accumulated debris and damage not present in personally maintained rigs
