Improvising video monitoring by mounting a camcorder to a film camera's viewfinder during production when primary video systems failed
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A camcorder can be mounted directly to a film camera's eyepiece using a magic arm with a photo screw and clamp to route video signal to external monitors and wireless transmission when the camera's video tap is unavailable or non-functional
Depends on
- The setup caused significant operating difficulties due to the high and off-center weight distribution, affecting dynamic range balance on a Steadicam
- Monitor image quality was severely compromised, making frame edge visibility and precise framing nearly impossible to judge
- The weight placement made it impossible to achieve dynamic balance, only static balance
- The arrangement only worked in one specific position and was difficult to align precisely
- The improvisation negatively impacted shot quality on demanding moves requiring precision
- This was a last-resort solution on a long shooting day after the primary video tap had failed
- Mounting a camcorder to a 16mm camera's eyepiece created asynchronous frame rate issues between 24fps camera and 25fps camcorder
