Counterweight selection and gimbal positioning for homemade camera stabilizers
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The counterweight at the bottom should be lighter than the camera weight to allow the gimbal to be positioned closer to the camera rather than at the midpoint.
- Positioning the gimbal closer to the camera lens reduces the amplification of stabilizer movement on the lens, similar to how holding a pencil closer to the eraser rather than at the middle point reduces eraser movement.
- To maintain adequate drop time of 2-3 seconds while moving the gimbal closer to the camera, additional weight must be added at the top stage.
- A monitor and rechargeable battery pack mounted at the bottom of the stabilizer can serve as sufficient counterweight without requiring separate balance weights.
- Spreading monitor and battery weight across approximately 18 inches at the bottom increases pan inertia.
Depends on
- The exact counterweight ratio depends on individual setup and must be determined empirically by finding the equilibrium point between camera and counterweight.
- This discussion involves homemade stabilizer construction which may vary significantly between builds.
- The pencil analogy illustrates the principle but does not account for all mechanical factors in stabilizer design.
