Mounting dovetail plates and accessories on RED EPIC for low-mode steadicam operation and potential cooling issues
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Inverting the camera upside down for low-mode operation and flipping the image in post-production or in the camera is a viable approach that does not cause overheating problems.
- Mounting a dovetail plate directly on top of the RED EPIC camera did not result in overheating issues during steadicam operation in tested configurations.
- Overheating problems with the RED EPIC occurred during conventional dolly mode with long takes rather than when using steadicam with mounted accessories.
- The camera's built-in fan can activate during extended takes in conventional mode, which may be problematic during dialogue-heavy or emotional scenes.
- A cheese plate mounted on top of the camera can serve as an interface for attaching a top dovetail plate without causing cooling problems.
- When the camera cannot be physically inverted, the in-camera image rotation feature produces a horizontally flipped but not vertically flipped result, which limits its usefulness for mirror rigs.
- A RED EPIC configured with PRO I/O back and appropriate battery placement can achieve weight distribution and handling characteristics comparable to an Alexa.
Depends on
- The image rotation feature within the camera does not fully solve rolling shutter directionality issues that may be required for compositing.
- Long conventional takes with the camera in standard orientation produced thermal issues regardless of top-mounted accessories.
- Some productions cannot accommodate physically inverting the camera due to video village requirements or matching rolling shutter direction for visual effects work.
- The discussion does not provide detailed specifications on the specific dovetail plate designs or mounting configurations used.
