Setting up onboard monitoring and HD output on Canon 5D Mark III for aerial camera work

13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Mark III outputs clean uncompressed HDMI at full HD resolution with 4:2:2 8-bit color when running the latest firmware
  • Unlike the Mark II, the Mark III does not downgrade image resolution when recording video
  • A HDMI to SDI converter can be used with the Mark III to feed a standard SDI workflow
  • External monitors can be mounted using a hot-shoe arm extension to position them off the side of the camera body
  • Small HD monitors and other third-party displays offer power connections that accept D-tap connectors, allowing battery plate solutions to power multiple components

Depends on

  • Experience reported is specific to Mark III with updated firmware
  • The original poster had previous issues with the Mark II losing image quality that motivated this inquiry
