Capturing HD footage from a DVR to a MacBook Pro
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- DVR HDMI outputs do not typically have DRM protection that prevents copying to editing software
- Several capture device options exist for MacBook Pro: Blackmagic Intensity Pro (requires desktop Mac with PCIe slot), Convergent Designs Nanoflash (portable via card reader), Matrox MXO2 Mini (under $500, uses ExpressCard), AJA IO Express (PCI Express, $995), Blackmagic UltraStudio 3D (Thunderbolt-compatible, $995, supports 3D)
- An Atomos Ninja device can successfully capture HD content from a DVR to a hard drive for editing
Depends on
- Blackmagic Intensity Pro only works with desktop computers that have PCIe slots, not MacBook Pro
- Convergent Designs Nanoflash is a costly solution
- Some capture devices require specific connection types not all MacBook Pro models possess
- No information provided about whether the approach works with all DVR models or manufacturers
