Using a Steadicam Merlin with a Canon 5D Mark III and 70-200mm lens
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The combination of a 5D Mark III with a 70-200mm lens is too front-heavy for the Merlin without additional support and will not balance properly.
- The Merlin can technically stabilize this setup when used with a vest and proper rigging, though it requires careful balancing and frequent adjustment.
- Mounting the stabilizer on the lens's tripod support ring, combined with specific weight configurations on the sled, allows the system to function.
- Using gaffer tape between the mounting plate and stabilizer helps prevent the plate from sliding during operation.
- The weight and balance challenges make this configuration impractical without a balancing stand or vest, and a heavier-duty sled is preferable for sustained use.
- Faster, wider prime lenses are better suited to the Merlin than telephoto zooms.
Depends on
- This represents a marginal use case that works but requires the vest, which the original questioner wanted to avoid.
- Success depends on careful initial balancing and ongoing adjustment during operation.
- One participant noted the Merlin's 7.5 lb capacity specification, raising questions about weight limits when additional rigging is added.
- The solution works in a pinch but is not recommended as a standard configuration.
