Mounting the EX1 camera on a Steadicam Pilot with a Manfrotto quick release plate causes balance and access issues
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The EX1 is approximately one pound heavier than the HPX170, which is within the theoretical capacity of the Pilot
- Mounting a Manfrotto quick release plate on the right side of the Pilot mounting plate creates significant right-side imbalance that requires compensatory weight on the left
- The tiedown lever on the Manfrotto quick release may require a full 180-degree rotation to lock, which can be difficult to achieve with limited space on the Pilot plate
- Repositioning the Manfrotto lever or using a riser plate underneath the quick release can provide sufficient clearance to operate the tiedown mechanism
- A spacer plate made from aluminum or steel approximately 1/4 inch thick, measuring roughly 1.5 to 2 inches wide, can be fabricated with basic tools like a hacksaw and drill to raise the quick release and improve ergonomic access
Depends on
- The experience described is from 2011 and may not reflect current equipment designs
- One operator confirmed the EX1 setup works on a Pilot but did not provide detailed balance performance data
- The specific Manfrotto quick release lever design varies by model, so solutions may differ depending on which version is used
- No comprehensive testing or long-term reliability data is provided for the proposed riser plate solution
