Preparing a large Steadicam® rig (GPI PRO CineLive with Tiffen Volt and GPI PRO Atlas Arm) for air travel in a Pelican 1650 case, including lithium battery regulations.
What the thread found
- Lithium batteries officially belong in carry-on luggage per aviation regulations; technically they may travel as 'attached to a device' in checked baggage, but security personnel interpretation is inconsistent, so batteries are safer kept in a carry-on case.
- One operator recommended placing an internal photograph inside cases, securing with cable ties, and including spare cable ties plus a friendly note for inspectors; AirTags in each case, along with an equipment list with serial numbers and dated photos, aid in tracking.
- Plan a prep day after arrival: vibrations during flight can loosen screws and connections on the rig.
- Monitor protection: place a soft cloth on the display, then a rigid board over it, then foam padding; Pelican case lids can flex in the middle, so position only foam (not equipment) in that zone.
- Robust transport cases such as Thermodyne have proven reliable for repeated international travel with large rigs.
