Weight distribution and load limits for the Steadicam Pilot AA stabilizer

17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The 10-pound maximum weight limit for the Pilot AA applies to the camera, battery, accessories, and any added screw-on weights, but does not include the structural weight of the sled itself.
  • The Pilot AA battery pack weighs approximately 0.75 pounds.
  • Screw-on middle-weights are 0.25 pounds each, while end-weights are 0.125 pounds each.
  • Optimal performance is achieved with approximately 2 pounds of weight on the bottom crossbar and 8 pounds on the top stage, which maintains the gimbal position around 2 inches from the stage.
  • Placing weights at the ends of the bottom crossbar rather than in the center improves pan smoothness and inertia.
  • Excessive weight on the bottom forces the gimbal away from the lens, reducing stability in tilt and roll axes, even if drop time is maintained at 2-3 seconds.
  • A tripod adapter makes it easier to mount and remove cameras from the Pilot.
  • Using an accurate scale to weigh the complete camera setup including all accessories is essential for proper balancing.

Depends on

  • The weight recommendations apply specifically to the Steadicam Pilot AA model.
  • The example configuration provided is based on use with a Canon XH-A1 camera weighing 4.5 pounds and may vary with different camera weights.
  • Drop time maintenance may conflict with optimal weight distribution for stability.
