Recording high frame rate camera footage through external transcoding devices
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- External transcoding monitors and recorders connected via HD-SDI are constrained to standard SMPTE frame rates rather than the arbitrary speeds a camera may shoot at
- The workaround of playing back slow motion footage directly in the camera while the transcoding device records the output can capture the desired effect, but the device itself cannot transcode non-standard frame rates to standard ones
- HD-SDI standard supports only 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p, and 60p output rates regardless of the input frame rate from the camera
- Cameras retain the ability to record their native high frame rates internally, making the camera's internal codec the most reliable option for preserving variable frame rate footage
Depends on
- The discussion references multiple specific devices but focuses primarily on technical limitations rather than testing all models
- Practical workaround suggested involves in-camera playback recording, which may introduce generation loss and is not ideal workflow
- Standards limitation applies to all devices using HD-SDI output
