Shortening the gimbal-to-Top Stage distance for better horizon control on a Steadicam® sled.

What the thread found

  • The basic rule is to add weight above the gimbal and/or reduce weight below it; this shifts the gimbal closer to the Top Stage.
  • Mount the battery plate flat and position it closer to the camera, then rebalance; alternatively, shorten the center post or reduce battery weight.
  • Setting the gimbal approximately 1.5 inches below the Top Stage and rebalancing immediately reveals where additional weight is needed; fall time typically decreases to about 2 seconds.
  • Adding more weight above the gimbal also increases inertia; use battery plates with minimal moving parts to avoid vibrations during fast movements.
  • Concrete tuning advice requires viewing the complete sled configuration.

Depends on

  • Effectiveness depends on the specific sled design, camera weight, and battery configuration.
