Used Zephyr with original SD monitor shows 'No signal' with Sony FX6; HD-SDI compatibility and monitor upgrade.
What the thread found
- The original monitor supplied with older Steadicam® models (Pilot, Archer) is an SD/composite-only unit with no SDI input and cannot display HD-SDI output from the FX6.
- On earlier Steadicam® models such as Archer, SD video runs through a BNC connector and then combines with power through a multipin Hirose connector at the base to reach the monitor; this cable is not coaxial and does not support HD-SDI transmission.
- HD-SDI requires a dedicated coaxial BNC-to-BNC cable: camera SDI output connects to the front BNC socket on the Top Stage, and monitor connects to a separate BNC socket on the Lower Stage.
- Solution: upgrade to a monitor with HD-SDI input such as 7-inch models from FeelWorld or Lilliput; power can be sourced by rewiring the old cable (cut off the old DIN connector and use red for positive, black for negative).
- Incorrect insertion of a Hirose connector can damage the monitor.
- Troubleshooting should begin by testing directly between camera and monitor with a single cable, then tracing the signal path through the sled; BNC connectors on models like the Archer can fail.
- Wireless transmission to the monitor is not recommended; over short distances it only adds latency and complexity without benefit.
Depends on
- Compatibility depends on monitor model and SDI input availability.
- Cable configuration varies by Steadicam® model generation.
