Weight and performance comparison of follow focus systems for lightweight camera rigs
21 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A Bartech Focus Device with power cable, M-One motor with mounting bracket and motor cable totals approximately 27 ounces
- A Heden M26P motor weighs about 5 ounces less than an M-One but has limited lens compatibility
- The Chrosziel Fox is lighter than a Bartech system but cannot drive an M-One motor
- M-One motors should be powered from 12V sources on camera sleds rather than directly from camera batteries
- Bartech systems can operate from camera batteries like the SR3 but require a more expensive cable with voltage converter
- Bartech Focus Device systems offer comparable performance to Preston systems at significantly lower weight
- Two separate follow focus channels allow independent control of different functions or multiple camera operation
Depends on
- Weight specifications are from 2005 and may not reflect current products
- The M26P motor has limited compatibility with film lenses
- Power compatibility issues are specific to SR3 camera batteries
- Comparisons are based on user experience rather than comprehensive testing
- The Preston MDR-1 comparison is anecdotal
