Swapping an ARRI ALEXA 35 between tripod/studio and Steadicam® mounting: baseplate choice and fastest workflow.
What the thread found
- Baseplate selection matters less than advance planning with focus puller to design the rig for quick conversion: place follow-focus motors on upper rods (never need repositioning), and consider a second wireless transmitter bracket for both studio and Steadicam® positions.
- Keep the sled fully cabled and assembled nearby; mark the baseplate and dovetail adapter to ensure the body sits roughly balanced on first mounting; decide on mode early, before rehearsal, as last-minute mode switches consume the most time.
- Practical baseplate solutions reported: ARRI plates that slide directly from the top stage to the head's ARRI plate (very fast with BUD-1 in the ARRI accessory system), Cam-Jam Cheese Plate with SOS plate, SAM-7 or SAM-8 with Betz Quick Release, or custom plates fabricated under an ARRI cage.
- Use of a cable clamp compendium (LMB) prevents rebuild of the rig between modes.
- With thorough prep, the swap takes under three minutes: remove viewfinder, handle, monitors; attach wireless transmitter to Steadicam® monitor via quick-release; leave remaining accessories cabled.
Depends on
- Switching speed depends on camera weight, accessory configuration, and whether a second transmitter bracket is available.
