Finding a bright (1500–2000 nits) low-mode monitor with recording and SDI I/O to replace a defective Transvideo Starlite.

What the thread found

  • The Shimbol Memory iPro 5.5 inch offers light weight, high brightness, on-board recording, and low cost; some operators use it as a Trinity monitor in place of a Starlite, and one operator anodized the silver housing black.
  • Power solutions for the Shimbol include a converter styled as a faux battery pack (Sony battery plate to Lemo, such as BreakerBatt), or a 2-pin Lemo connector installed into the housing; an ECG 2-pin connector allows repositioning when monitor space is tight.
  • The Shimbol's protective glass can be removed by warming it.
  • The SmallHD 503 continues to receive praise, but SmallHD has discontinued support for the 507 series, raising concerns that support for the 503 may follow.
  • The SmartSystem 5 inch (Zen-level) is under consideration; a 7 inch high-brightness model is reported as excellent but does not record (recording capability is in development).
  • Custom 12 V cables using 2-pin 0B Lemo connectors are unproblematic; monitor power draws have no special requirements.

Depends on

  • Recording capability (Shimbol) versus SmartSystem brightness and metering performance.
