Preston MDR3 follow focus controller new features and practical observations

13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The MDR3 adds analog input for zoom control and a fourth channel compared to the MDR2.
  • Motor current throughput increased to support higher motor speeds and torque.
  • The MDR3 is denser than the MDR2 with similar weight distribution.
  • Status indicator lights for torque and motor direction turn off after three seconds of inactivity, preventing distraction during filming.
  • Power indicator light and channel number display remain on continuously.
  • The device has mounting holes on two sets of locations: four holes on the back and four holes on the side opposite the antenna.
  • Smaller connectors are used compared to previous models.
  • Aftermarket bracket solutions exist to adapt the MDR3 to standard Steadicam sled mounting patterns.

Depends on

  • Antenna placement may be inconvenient depending on mounting configuration.
  • Only one set of mounting hole orientation matches standard lettering, requiring either custom brackets or mounting the unit upside-down.
  • The green power indicator light may require covering to prevent set distraction.
  • Initial impressions from product preview; long-term reliability and performance not yet established.
