Reducing vibration transmission from monitor mounts to camera rigs
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Monitor vibration problems typically originate from the weight of the monitor being supported at a single point far from the center post, which is particularly noticeable when using long lenses.
- Non-stretching sailing rope attached between monitor bracket attachment points and wrapped around the support post can significantly reduce vibrations.
- Moving the monitor clamp up the post by one or two inches changes the resonant frequency and uses the battery rack as a mass damper to reduce vibrations.
- Using a stabilization plate under the monitor housing and adding secondary attachment points from the plate to the main support structure can minimize shimmy.
- Carbon-fiber posts are significantly stiffer than standard posts and can better absorb monitor vibrations before they reach the camera.
- Battery attachment plates with loose tolerances, particularly Anton Bauer Gold Mounts, can be a source of vibration that requires securing with soft velcro or other damping methods.
- Plastic camera bodies combined with adapter plates can create flex points that transmit vibrations; inserting wedges between sliding baseplates and adapter supports can eliminate this problem.
- The rigidity of monitor brackets varies by model, with some aftermarket brackets providing better vibration isolation than others.
Depends on
- Most solutions are based on practical experience rather than controlled testing.
- The severity of vibration problems is most apparent with long focal length lenses and may be imperceptible in other shooting scenarios.
- Different rig configurations and post types may produce different results.
- Some vibration sources remain unresolved in the discussion, such as the extent to which vibrations actually reach the camera sensor.
