Upgrading an M1 Volt gimbal from 1.5-inch to 1.75-inch center rod: insert replacement procedure and encoder ring considerations.
Note (as of October 2026)Curt O. Schaller, the developer of Artemis and Trinity, has no longer been with ARRI since the end of 2025. To our knowledge, ARRI currently has no dedicated team and no official contact persons for its stabilizer systems. In our view, the future of this line is uncertain. If you are buying new, get written confirmation from ARRI beforehand on how long service and spare parts are guaranteed. Have used rigs checked by the manufacturer before you buy.

What the thread found
- The conversion is possible by replacing two inserts: the clamp insert at the bottom and the insert at the top inside the gimbal; one operator regularly switches between 1.75-inch Artemis rod and 1.5-inch PRO rod.
- The monitor clamp brake part cited by a Tiffen representative is incorrect; order the correct inserts directly from Tiffen or an authorized service partner.
- The lower insert in the gimbal grip has a small hole for a retaining pin that must snap into place.
- The 1.5-inch inserts fit tightly; use a small slotted screwdriver to pry them up, then extract with needle-nose pliers.
- Whether the Volt encoder ring must be removed is contested among operators.
Depends on
- Encoder ring removal may depend on individual gimbal assembly or age of the rig.
