Power distribution failure of D-Tap step-down splitters on a Venice 2 rig, and proper AKS accessory power supply methods.

What the thread found
- Two D-Tap 24-to-12 V step-down splitters failed within days when powering wireless video transmitters and sled motors on a 24 V system.
- The probable cause was exceeding the current rating of the step-down converter; the Lemo outputs on the sled are typically better dimensioned for the load.
- Recommendation: power AKS accessories via the sled's Lemo connectors (standard 3-pin 12/24 V Lemo outputs) rather than from a 12 V battery tap, as the latter risks introducing ground loops that can damage BNC/SDI ports.
- The camera's Lemo socket did not supply sufficient current for all AKS components.
- One operator routinely flies 12 V systems (except film cameras or Alexa 35) without issues, using two Blueshape Mini Granite 140 batteries (12 A capacity each) plus Volt, whereas a Swit 146 (10 A) powered all AKS, Volt, and two monitors at only half capacity, suggesting higher-capacity batteries per channel are preferable.
- Running two separate video systems (e.g., focus and program transmitters) unnecessarily stresses power management; looping the clean feed from a focus monitor to the program monitor reduces the load.
Depends on
- Whether to run the entire system on 12 V or use 24 V with step-down converters remains debated among operators.
- The optimal approach depends on camera type, transmitter and motor specifications, and battery capacity available.
