Hardmount adapter options for Merlin and Pilot camera arms
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Commercial hardmount adapters for Merlin/Pilot arms to Mitchell mounts include the Tiffen Flyer Vehicle Mount, though it is expensive.
- The Merlin and Pilot arm-side socket block is compatible with the Flyer vest socket block but not with professional socket blocks.
- A DIY hardmount can be constructed from aluminum bar stock with drilled holes to engage the arm connector and tapped holes for fastening, then mounted to extrusion and secured with G-clamps to vehicle structures.
- DIY hardmount installations require extensive safety precautions including operator harnesses, door wedging, and skilled vehicle operation.
Depends on
- The Tiffen Flyer Vehicle Mount compatibility was not verified in both directions.
- DIY construction requires machining skills and carries unknown structural and safety risks.
- Mitchell mounts are standard on camera cars but may not be present on all shooting platforms.
- The DIY approach described had limited testing and the builder noted viewing angles can be constrained by vehicle door positions.
