Rigging a Steadicam® Zephyr with Sony FX6 to an off-road vehicle (UTV) for live transmission: Hard Mount preparation and alternatives

What the thread found

  • Vehicle rigging is grip work and should not be attempted alone; engage a Key Grip or grip team to build and verify the rig.
  • Ideal setup: Hard Mount with Speed Rail clamp (such as Klassen Hard Mount) secured to a pipe frame built by grips; a Mitchell Mount on a high hat with apple boxes and tension straps is possible but wood and high-hat fasteners can fail on rough terrain.
  • Before rigging, confirm exact vehicle specifications, cargo bed or hitch dimensions, speed during operation, and ground conditions; assume gravity alone will not secure the rig and operator.
  • Perform a 'monkey test' by shaking the complete rig with full body weight before the shoot.
  • On small vehicles, extend the arm and sled far enough to prevent the sled from striking the vehicle frame; during panning away from the body, sled batteries can strike the operator's leg.
  • Steadicam® performance on rough terrain is inconsistent even with sled gyros; for live transmission without retakes, a stabilized remote head on a damped arm with hand wheels is more reliable.
  • One operator recommended proposing alternative camera systems to the production given the live transmission requirement.

Depends on

  • Vehicle payload capacity and frame strength
  • Terrain roughness and speed profile
  • Operator safety harness and helmet availability
  • Sled gyro performance on impact loads
  • Live transmission tolerance for instability
