Commissioning and calibration accuracy expectations for follow focus systems
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Accuracy should be very close to perfect, with perhaps a single line of error acceptable due to gear lash on stiff lenses.
- Flex in motor mounting hardware is the most common cause of accuracy problems, so rigid mounting with thicker rods produces better results than thinner diameter rods.
- Each lens of the same focal length requires individual calibration adjustments even within the same brand.
- Initial calibration accuracy directly determines later recall accuracy, particularly at the infinity mark where calibration must be precise.
Depends on
- Discussion involves specific systems from 2008 and particular camera bodies mentioned.
- Accuracy tolerance described as subjective with only rough guidance provided.
- No systematic testing methodology described for commissioning.
