Quick-release plate systems for Steadicam rigs to enable faster camera swaps
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Cat Griller provides a lightweight quick-release solution and is preferred for most setups unless frequent handheld transitions are needed
- A combination of Sony-style plate with rods on the stage dovetail paired with an Arri digicine baseplate on the head allows quick body swaps while keeping lens support and follow focus mounted on the head
- Using an Arri dovetail with 19mm rods combined with a short plate from Innocinema/ActionProducts works well for frequent handheld transitions
- SOS plates are reported to perform well as a quick-release solution
- Adding extra dovetail plates to the top stage increases both weight and overall height, making this approach less favorable than dedicated quick-release systems
- With larger format cameras like RED Epics, the added weight of quick-release plates becomes less problematic
- Short zoom lenses require minimal rebalancing after a camera body swap using quick-release plates
Depends on
- Camera height can be too high for some adapter plates like the Genus GAP Adaptor Plate when used with larger format cameras
- The Arri dovetail compatibility varies depending on rig specifications
