Identifying sources of sway and sway in camera sled static balance

What the thread found

  • Movement in the C stand support structure will transfer to the sled and cause swaying during balance attempts, even if the movement is minimal.
  • Combo stands are less prone to bowing compared to C stands and therefore recommended for more stable balancing.
  • Roughing in the sled on the C stand before final trimming while wearing the full rig can help achieve better balance.
  • Play or looseness in the top stage, bottom stage, batteries, gimbal centering, or cable positioning can cause sway.
  • Repositioning the balance point closer to the base of the C stand can reduce bowing effects but may not eliminate all sway.

Depends on

  • The specific cause of sway depends on the individual rig setup and sled model.
  • The suggestion to suit up during final trimming reflects one operator's workflow and may not apply universally.
  • No systematic testing was described to isolate which factor was responsible for the sway in the original case.
