Comparison between original Flyer and Flyer LE stabilizers for different camera weights
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The original Flyer remains a solid choice for lighter cameras like EX3 or HVX200 models and costs less than the LE
- The Flyer LE features a thicker extendable post that handles heavier camera loads more easily than the original model
- The Flyer LE has a larger knurled gimbal grip and a redesigned topstage that is quicker to use compared to the original Flyer
- The original Flyer's 3/4 inch post becomes difficult to work with in low mode when carrying heavier cameras
- The Flyer LE can technically support a RED camera when stripped down, but the weight becomes problematic once essential accessories like follow focus, matte box, and monitoring equipment are added
- Cable routing through the topstage becomes an issue with RED cameras on the LE, as power and video cables may not fit through the hole
- The extendable post on the Flyer LE allows balance adjustments between takes without needing to remove the rig from the stand and use a wrench
Depends on
- Comparisons focus on specific camera models from 2011 and may not apply to modern equipment
- The discussion about RED camera compatibility is limited to one operator's experience with a stripped-down configuration
- No direct side-by-side testing reported between both models with identical camera setups
- The original Flyer's performance with heavier cameras is described as possible but not ideal
