Comparison of PRO Gen III and Gen IV battery racks for cinema sled systems
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found
- The Gen III battery rack includes built-in weight distribution options and removable battery positions to adjust sled balance, while the Gen IV is approximately half the weight and height with fixed battery positions
- The Gen III uses a three-jumper-block battery management system with an indexable rear section allowing batteries to be positioned parallel or perpendicular to the ground, while the Gen IV uses a single proprietary jumper block with a sliding dovetail system for fine adjustment
- Both Gen III and Gen IV racks allow dynamic balance tuning through sliding mechanisms, though the Gen III indexing system may offer easier recall of previous settings compared to manual marking on the Gen IV
- The Gen IV battery rack performs effectively with Alexa camera systems but may require post extension or weight adjustment when used with lighter camera packages, whereas the Gen III provides more flexibility for varied camera and accessory configurations without modification
- The Gen IV features a more compact profile and simpler design that reduces overall sled height and weight, while the Gen III offers greater versatility through removable battery positions and multiple jumper block options at approximately three times the cost
- Compatibility of Gen III jumper blocks with Gen IV racks remains disputed, with manufacturer guidance stating they are not compatible while some operators reported successful use of alternative jumper blocks on Gen IV systems
Depends on
- Pricing and cost considerations heavily influence the decision, making Gen III most practical for those building a rig for long-term use with variable camera packages
- Gen IV sliding mechanism can bind and may be obstructed by tall batteries or external accessories like CamWave systems when fully inserted
- Experience and observations are limited to specific camera models mentioned and particular accessory combinations like Alexa with AKS and C300
- The jumper block compatibility question between Gen III and Gen IV remains unresolved with conflicting reports from different sources and operators
