Steadicam Merlin arc distance calculation discrepancies and dynamic balancing difficulties with lightweight camera setups
15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The magic formula spreadsheet can produce arc distance values smaller than the minimum physically achievable arc distance on the Merlin rig, particularly with lightweight camera loads like a GoPro 3D setup at 370 grams.
- When the calculated arc distance from the formula does not match the minimum measurable arc distance on the actual rig, static balance may be achievable but trim and dynamic balance become problematic with erratic panning behavior.
- Adding weight to the top stage can help achieve proper balance with lightweight cameras by bringing the total rig mass closer to that of heavier camera setups previously used.
- Raising the camera mounting point to increase the center of gravity height may allow for smaller achievable arc distances while maintaining balance.
Depends on
- The discrepancy observed was specific to a GoPro 3D setup and may not apply to other lightweight camera configurations.
- The formula's accuracy or applicability to very lightweight payloads was not definitively resolved in the discussion.
- The advice to add weight to the top stage was based on experience with larger rigs rather than direct Merlin experience.
- No definitive solution was provided for achieving perfect dynamic balance in the lightweight camera scenario described.
